Elton John & Olivia Newton-John Among 1,100 People Recognized by New Year’s Honours List
Queen Elizabeth’s annual New Year’s Honours List has been released and among the 1,100 people recognized are Elton John and Olivia Newton-John.
John was awarded the Companion of Honour, which makes him one of only 65 people that can hold that honor at one time. This honor comes 21 years after John was knighted by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace in 1998.
John tweeted, “I’m humbled and honored to be among such highly esteemed company in receiving the Companion of Honour. 2019 has turned out to be a truly wonderful year for me and I feel extraordinarily blessed.”
Newton-John was made a dame for “services to charity, cancer research and entertainment.” Previously, she became an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1979.
“I am extremely excited, honored and grateful beyond words to be included with such an esteemed group of women who have received this distinguished award before me,” Newton-John said in a statement.
Others who are named to list include Queen drummer Roger Taylor who received an OBE for his services to music, and Best Picture Oscar-winning British directors Sam Mendes and Steve McQueen, both of which have been knighted.
