Featured Spotlight Station: Retro Album Rock

Live365's "Featured Spotlight Station" this week is Retro Album Rock! We spoke with DJ Phred about their setup, what listeners can expect to hear, and the station's favorite songs. Check out the interview below!

What brought you to Live365?

I was a former Live365 broadcaster before it shut down, and then came back when it was revived. I like that Live365 takes care of my licensing for me.

What's your studio like?

Our studio consists of Windows OS, an Electrovoice RE-20 Cardioid Broadcast Microphone, Sony MDR-7506 Studio Headphones, SAM Broadcaster Pro for live segments, and we use AutoDJ the rest of the time.

What can listeners expect when they tune in to your station?

Broadcasting from Nashville, Music City USA, we take a trip into progressive radio's past, one year at a time! Each week, we spotlight a different "featured year" from the early days of freeform FM radio in the early 80s. Listeners can expect a blend of deep album tracks, classic rock favorites, one-hit wonders, rare cuts, and crossover songs from other music genres. Plus, you'll hear memories of TV, movie, news, sports, and other lifestyle events from that particular year, all presented in an interesting and unique way.

What has been your favorite moment as a DJ/Station Manager so far?

I love discovering that listeners from so many countries around the world are tuning in to my station!

What is the best concert you've ever attended, and why?

Pink Floyd at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville in 1994. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

What artist (dead or alive) would you love to see live, but haven't had the chance to?

The Rolling Stones

We asked for some of the station's favorite songs. Here's what they had to say!

This is a tough one, but I'll try to find a few. Here it goes...

  1. Abbey Road Medley - The Beatles
In my opinion, the best produced recording of all-time!

  2. Thick as a Brick Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 - Jethro Tull
The best single composition of all-time.

  3. Speak to Me/Breathe/On The Run - Pink Floyd
The beginning of the best engineered album of all time.

  4. More Than a Feeling - Boston
The first time I heard it when programming my college radio station, I knew it was an instant hit, even though the band was unknown at the time.

  5. Terrapin Station - Grateful Dead
The extended medley demonstrates the band's talent and versatility.

  6. Beds Are Burning - Midnight Oil
The band delivers a powerful message through a powerful (and "hooky") presentation.
