Featured Spotlight Station: WJMS Radio, LLC
Live365's "Featured Spotlight Station" this week is WJMS Radio, LLC! We recently spoke with station manager Jaymie Bowles to talk about WJMS's setup, what listeners can expect to hear, and some of the station's biggest hits. Check out the interview below!
What brought you to Live365?
I had been struggling with finding a way to legalize my stream through ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. I got a promo email from Jason at Live365 and he talked about how the Live365 platform has the solution. It was a tough choice since I was already established with another platform, but in the end I knew this was the move to make so that everything could be on the up-and-up.
What's your studio like?
I have Sam Broadcaster Pro, two microphones (but more if need be), two pairs of headphones, and a nice little computer station setup. Believe it or not, the second bedroom of my apartment has been converted into a studio for my podcasts and recordings. But everything sounds like it's coming from a live studio space! I like to make the best of what I have and bring the best to the air whenever I can. It also feels good to know I can be totally comfortable at home and in my own space while broadcasting and recording.
What can listeners expect when they tune in to your station?
They can expect good music that has a message and some local artist features as well. We don't play any trap music etc. -- we play tracks that make you nod your head and say "I miss hearing this song!" Sometimes old school, sometimes new school. Or depending on the hour, we also have live programming from hosts around the country that have some very good conversations with people in the community who are making a difference.
WJMS seeks to do radio different, that's why our tag line is "Radio Re-Imagined." We are changing the media narrative from constant negative news to positive community affairs with a millennial feel! We have conversations you actually want to engage in.
What has been your favorite moment as a DJ/Station Manager so far?
No one is coaching me on this. I learn everything as I go. But my favorite moment being a station manager is when I discovered Live365 (no lie), because the licensing issue had been plaguing my thoughts for so long. It was refreshing to find a platform handling it all! Those moments, the ones where things fall into place, they make it worth it! There are always the moments when someone recognizes the station for what it is, which is truly great, but by and large the things that take pressure off of me, so I can continue to bring good quality radio, are the things that mean the most sometimes.
What is the best concert you've ever attended, and why?
I have only ever been to a few concerts, but my first concert was Common and Estelle opened. I saw it at the House of Blues in Boston, and it was my first real concert experience. I loved it. I have an old soul, so seeing Common live was a big deal for me. I love his old school hip-hop vibe!
Jaymie listed some of the station's top played songs:
In no particular order...
1. "Liberated" by DeJ Loaf ft. Leon Bridges
This song has such a good summer feel to it. I can't help but be in a good mood when I hear it. Plus it is a positive song with a great message!
This song has a nice R&B vibe to it. Also has a good message and it just makes me feel good when I hear it.
3. "Four Pink Walls" by Alessia Cara
This song resonates with me for some reason. That is all I can say...
4. "Tennessee Whiskey" by Chris Stapleton
Because I listen to a little bit of everything... And I absolutely love singing this song at the top of my lungs (in my car with the windows all the way up, haha).
5. "Optimistic" by Sounds of Blackness
It is impossible to not feel happy listening to this song! It's an oldie but goodie for me.
