Fleet Foxes and Blood Orange Both Cover the Strokes’ 'Under Control'

Over the weekend, a strange - yet awesome - coincidence happened in the music scene. Both Fleet Foxes and Blood Orange covered the song “Under Control” by the Strokes during separate headlining shows in New York.

"Under Control" comes from the Strokes' 2003 album Room on Fire. Blood Orange played it at Baby’s All Right on Friday night (August 12) with help from Eva Tolkin. His version was intimate, somber, and quiet. Fleet Foxes covered the song that following evening (August 13) at Forest Hills Stadium with opener Uwade joining in on vocals. Their rendition of the tune was more upbeat, with a faster pace and added percussion.

Fleet Foxes are currently on tour in support of their Grammy-nominated 2020 album Shore. It’s the band’s first trek since their shows behind 2017’s Crack-Up. Joining Robin Pecknold on the dates are traditional Fleet Foxes members Skyler Skjelset, Casey Wescott, Christian Wargo, and Morgan Henderson.

Devonté Hynes’ most recent album under the Blood Orange moniker was his 2019 mixtape Angel’s Pulse. He’s stayed busy remixing songs for Tame Impala and Sugababes, hopping on the Avalanches’ comeback single “We Will Always Love You,” and collaborating with Los Angeles–based artist Park Hye Jin on the song “CalL Me (Freestyle).”

As for the Strokes, their latest album, The New Abnormal, came out in 2020. The band has been on tour promoting the album throughout the summer. In June, frontman Julian Casablancas sold a stake in the Strokes’ catalog for an undisclosed sum to Primary Wave.
