Janelle Monáe Shares New Song 'Float'

Janelle Monáe has made her return to music. The singer has released her first new music of the year: “Float.” The brassy R&B tune features Fela Kuti’s youngest son, Seun Kuti, and his band, Egypt 80.

In "Float," Janelle celebrates finding confidence and letting go of self-doubt over an upbeat, anthemic-sounding instrumental. Monáe teased the track for the first time on her birthday, December 1st, 2022 uploading a clip to social media of her in the studio playing the song.

The new song is produced by Nana Kwabena, Nate “Rocket” Wonder, and Sensei Bueno. “Float” is Monáe’s first track since 2021 when she shared “Stronger” and an extended version of “Say Her Name (Hell You Talmbout).” It is the first single of her upcoming fifth studio album. Monáe’s last studio album, Dirty Computer, arrived all the way back in April 2018.

While Monáe has been quiet on the music front, she is still regularly acting in films. She recently featured in the 2022 Rian Johnson movie Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. She won the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film. The Atlanta Film Critics Circle Awards gave her Best Supporting Actress, too.
