Janis Joplin's Scrapbook 'Days & Summers' to Be Released in June

Janis Joplin's personal scrapbook, which she created and kept from 1966 through 1968, will be released to the public on June 10th. The unedited copies contain rare photographs, unpublished letters, newspaper clips, souvenirs, and annotations from Joplin herself.

Janis Joplin: Days & Summers features an introduction by Grace Slick and showcases Joplin's teen years in Port Arthur, Texas. Joplin began scrapbooking while attending Thomas Jefferson High School in the 50s. Early pages show class photos, play programs, valentines, ribbons, and other memorabilia.

Later pages show Joplin’s meteoric rise to fame: playing gigs in coffee houses, joining Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966, and hanging out with The Grateful Dead in San Francisco's psychedelic scene. Other spreads are devoted to Joplin’s performance at Monterey Pop Festival - considered her introduction to the world - in 1967.

There are even some clippings from her tours and travels, including Woodstock, The Dick Cavett Show, and an envelope she mailed to her father while staying at the Hotel Chelsea in New York City. See an official preview of the pages in Genesis Publications' video below.

“Our mother was into photo albums and shared a lot of the family,” Joplin’s younger sister Laura told Rolling Stone. “We learned about our own life in keeping a scrapbook, in our awareness that the page was an expression and how we we used it. And Janis really got into it. She was visually an expressive person as well as a singer.”

Janis Joplin: Days & Summers is hand-stamped by the estate and limited to 2,000 copies. There is a collector's edition as well as a deluxe. The latter includes a portrait of Joplin signed by Grace Slick. You can pre-order Janis Joplin: Days & Summers here.
