Japanese Breakfast Covers Yoko Ono's 'Nobody Sees Me Like You Do'

Pop band Japanese Breakfast has shared a cover of Yoko Ono’s “Nobody Sees Me Like You Do.” It’s the second single from Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono - a 14-song tribute album compiled by Death Cab for Cutie’s Benjamin Gibbard featuring covers of Ono’s work.

In a trailer for a podcast associated with the project, Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner said of Ono: “She was the most—sort of—hated woman in music for a while—so unfairly—that I think, obviously, as an Asian woman, I sided with her, and saw her as a very deep and complex artist that was being unfairly judged by the world and how difficult that must have been. And it became very symbolic for me.”

Earlier this month, David Byrne and Yo La Tengo shared the compilation‘s first single: a cover of Ono’s “Who Has Seen the Wind.” Sharon Van Etten, the Flaming Lips, US Girls, Jay Som, Stephin Merritt (of Magnetic Fields), Thao, Sudan Archives, We Are King, Deerhoof, and Amber Coffman will also be featured on the project.

You can pre-order Ocean Child - due out February 18, Ono's 89th birthday - here. A portion of the album’s proceeds will be donated to WhyHunger, a non-profit organization Ono supported for decades.

In other Japanese Breakfast news, the band also covered Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So” last October for Spotify’s Live at Electric Lady series. They have also been included in the 2022 Coachella and Governors Ball lineups.
