John Legend to Be Honored With National Civil Rights Museum's Freedom Award
This year, the National Civil Rights Museum will honor musician John Legend, feminist writer Gloria Steinem, and human rights activist Hafsat Abiola with the Freedom Award.
Each year, the museum honors civil and human rights leaders with the Freedom Award, which serves as a "symbol of the ongoing fight for human rights both in America and worldwide." The awards will be presented on Oct. 30 at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis.
Legend is a recording artist who uses his music, influence, and resources to promote social justice and equality. He is the founder of the Show Me Campaign, which works to give disadvantaged children access to quality education and end the school-to-prison pipeline.
Steinem is an author, lecturer, and political activist who leads several organizations promoting gender equality and the rights of women and girls.
Abiola is a Nigerian activist who is president of Women in Africa, a group that supports African women with high potential, and the founder of Kudirat Initiative for Democracy, which seeks to strengthen civil society and promote democracy in Nigeria.
