John Lennon-Owned & Beatles-Signed LP Sells for $234K at Auction
At a Beatles-themed auction last week, John Lennon's personal copy of the Beatles’ infamous “butcher cover” version of Yesterday and Today sold for $234,000. The copy was also autographed by Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr, and featured a drawing on the back cover by Lennon.
The LP, which was the centerpiece of Julien’s Auctions’ The Beatles in Liverpool auction, was purchased by an anonymous American collector. Over 300 pieces of Beatles memorabilia were available at the auction.
According to Julien’s Auctions, the album hung on the wall of Lennon's New York apartment before being given to Beatles fan and collector Dave Morrell.
“This was a world record for a Beatles Butcher cover and the third highest price paid for a vinyl,” Darren Julien, CEO/President of Julien’s Auctions, said in a statement. “The market is still developing so we anticipate in the next five years this same record could bring $500,000 plus.”
The highest price ever paid for a vinyl record is a $790,000 bid for Ringo Starr’s personal copy of the Beatles’ White Album at a previous auction hosted by Julien’s Auctions in 2015.
