Mariah Carey Set to Open NFL Christmas Gameday

Mariah Carey is helping the NFL kick off its first-ever Christmas gameday on Netflix. The streamer announced Thursday (December 12) the Queen of Christmas will star in an opening segment setting up the day’s two games.

Carey will appear in a pre-taped performance of her annual holiday chart-topper “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Her song will pave the way for a showdown between Super Bowl champs the Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers at 1pm ET, followed by the Baltimore Ravens taking on the Houston Texans at 4:30pm ET.

The Mariah Carey announcement is welcome news for Pittsburgh folk, specifically those who tried to catch her on tour while she was in the city. Shortly before showtime on Wednesday (December 11), Carey told fans she would have to cancel that night’s gig at Pittsburgh's PPG Paints Arena due to illness.

"Pittsburgh, I am sorry to say, I’ve come down with the flu,” the singer wrote. “It breaks my heart that I unfortunately have to cancel tonight’s show. I love you all so much.” The arena posted a note just before Carey’s – announcing the cancellation and telling fans that they will receive an email with refund options. The Chiefs and Steelers will be battling it out at Pittsburgh's Acrisure Stadium on December 25, so even though her performance will be pre-taped, city dwellers will still be able to see Carey on their home turf.

Carey's not the only superstar set to perform on Christmas gameday. Beyoncé will perform at her hometown NRG Stadium in Houston during the Texans/Ravens game halftime show. It will mark her first live set since the release of Cowboy Carter, and is set to include a special guest or two. She recently dropped a new teaser for her upcoming NFL performance in which she steps into a snowy scene and hangs an ornament on a cactus while wearing an all-white cowgirl getup.

Looking to watch the two performances and the games? Besides on the streaming service, the Netflix Christmas Day games will also air on broadcast TV in the competing team cities (CBS affiliates in Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Houston) and be available on U.S. mobile devices on NFL+.
