Metallica, Jonas Brothers, & Mariah Carey Tapped for 10th Anniversary Global Citizen Fest

Metallica, Jonas Brothers, and Mariah Carey are among the artists that have been tapped for the 10th anniversary Global Citizen Festival that's taking place in New York City’s Central Park on September 24.

The Global Citizen Festival aims to encourage global leaders and corporations to commit billions to current issues such as the climate crisis, food shortages, and ensuring a better future for women. This year, not only will there be a show in NYC, another show will take place in Black Star Square in Accra, Ghana, also on September 24

The New York City show will be headlined by Metallica, who haven’t played in the city since 2017. In addition to the Jonas Brothers and Mariah Carey, other acts taking the stage include Rosalía, Mickey Guyton, Charlie Puth, and Måneskin. As for the Ghana show, Usher, SZA, H.E.R., Tems, Stormzy, Gyakie, Sarkodie, and Stonebwoy will all perform. Tickets to both events are free and can be obtained via the Global Citizen website or app. The event will also air on ABC, FX, Hulu, iHeartRadio, YouTube, Twitter, TimesLive, and more.

On top of all the performances, Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans says “there’s gonna be some big surprises” to mark the festival’s 10th anniversary at the NYC concert. He’s also excited about bringing the event to West Africa, considering 2022 marks the 65th anniversary of Ghanaian independence, and the 20th anniversary of the founding of the African Union.

“Ghana is honoured to host this year’s edition of the Global Citizens Festival. I look forward to welcoming each and everyone of you to Accra, capital of the country at the centre of the world,” Ghana’s president, H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo, says. “Together, let us join hands and help accelerate progress towards the realization of the [sustainable development goals]. We owe to the next generation to live in a world free from poverty, disease and the degradation of the environment. The time to help make a change is now.”

In the 10 years since the Global Citizen Festival launched, Hugh Evans says the events have “resulted in over $41 billion not just committed, but deployed around the world to support NGO partners and impact over a billion lives.”
