Mitski Hired to Write Music and Lyrics for New 'Queen’s Gambit' Musical
Mitski has announced she will write the music and lyrics for an upcoming musical stage production of The Queen’s Gambit: the 1983 Walter Tevis novel that was recently adapted into the hit Netflix mini-series.
Playwright Eboni Booth will pen the book for the show while Whitney White is set to direct. The show will be produced by Level Forward, which is a company that has also brought shows such as Slave Play, Oklahoma!, What the Constitution Means to Me, and Jagged Little Pill to Broadway.

"Before Level Forward even brought the idea of making a musical of The Queen’s Gambit, I was a fan of the Netflix show, and an even greater fan of the original novel," Mitski said in a press statement about the production. "So I was already determined to be a member of this team. And then I met Eboni and Whitney, and my determination grew tenfold! I absolutely had to be a part of this! I am ecstatic to get to work with all of these amazing creatives, who’ve each built beautiful and unique repertoires of their own."
The Queen’s Gambit tells the story of orphan turned chess prodigy Beth Harmon. The official synopsis for the musical states, “As soon as she touches a pawn, her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of sixteen, she’s competing for the U.S. Open championship.”
Details about the musical's world premiere will be revealed at a later date. In other Mitski news, the artist released her latest LP, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, in September. She takes the record out on tour through North America in January, with support from Tamino, Sunny War, Julia Jacklin, Sarah Kinsley, and Cowboy Junkies.
