Nicki Minaj Becomes First Solo Female Rapper to Debut Atop Billboard Hot 100 Since Lauryn Hill
“Super Freaky Girl” is Nicki Minaj’s third #1 single and her first without accompaniment. With the song's success, Minaj has broken a new record: she's become the first solo female rapper to debut atop the Billboard Hot 100 since Ms. Lauryn Hill did it in 1998 with the song “Doo Wop (That Thing)”.
"Super Freaky Girl" - a raunchy tune which wonderfully samples Rick James' 1981 classic "Super Freak" - has been streamed 21.1 million times, garnering 4.6 million radio airplay audience impressions. It's also managed to sell 89,000 digital downloads in its first week, according to Luminate.
Yesterday, Minaj posted pictures relating to the song's unexpected success on Instagram. "You did it barbz," she wrote in the caption, "You did it. I love you so much. like so so SO much. Thank you."
Only a handful of female rappers — including Megan Thee Stallion, Iggy Azalea, and Cardi B — have topped the Billboard Hot 100 since Ms. Lauryn Hill. Cardi B leads the group with five total #1 singles. Two of her chart-topping songs (“Bodak Yellow” and “Up”) were unaccompanied, but they did not debut atop the chart. The rapper’s three other chart-toppers (“I Like It,” “Girls Like You,” and ”WAP”) were collaborations.
“Super Freaky Girl” is Nicki Minaj’s third #1 single following “Say So” with Doja Cat and “Trollz” with 6ix9ine. The dancy new song is co-produced by Aaron Joseph, Dr. Luke (who also produced "Say So"), Malibu Babie, and Vaughn Oliver.
