Oscars 2024: Best Original Score & Best Original Song Nominees Announced

For all you film music lovers out there, the Academy has some big news. Nominations have been shared for the Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories at the 2024 Oscars.

Starting with Best Original Score: Ludwig Göransson’s Oppenheimer, Jerskin Fendrix’s Poor Things, Laura Karpman’s American Fiction, John Williams’ Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Robbie Robertson’s Killers of the Flower Moon are all up for the trophy. Notably, the Poor Things nomination caps a surprise rise to the world stage for Jerskin Fendrix, a fixture of London’s Windmill-based indie scene and collaborator of Black Midi and Black Country, New Road. Robbie Robertson, meanwhile, is being honored posthumously. The score for Killers of the Flower Moon was completed shortly before his death.

As for Best Original Song, there are two tracks from the same plastic, fantastic movie nominated. The Barbie songs "What Was I Made For?" and "I'm Just Ken" were nominated alongside Flamin’ Hot’s “The Fire Inside” (written by Diane Warren and performed by Becky G), American Symphony’s “It Never Went Away” (written by Jon Batiste and Semisonic’s Dan Wilson and performed by Batiste), and Killers of the Flower Moon’s “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” (written by Scott George and performed by the Osage Tribal Singers).

Eilish seems to be the clear frontrunner for the award, as her and Finneas recently snagged the Golden Globe for "What Was I Made For?" Additionally, she has some Academy favor. Her and Finneas previously won the 2022 award for Best Original Song with their James Bond theme "No Time to Die."

Last year's Academy Award for Best Original Score went to Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka) for his work on All Quiet on the Western Front, while the 2023 Academy Award for Best Original Song went to composer M.M. Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose for “Naatu Naatu” from RRR. The 2024 Academy Awards take place on March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
