Pearl Jam Raises $11 Million to Help Fight Homelessness in Seattle
Pearl Jam recently announced that they had raised $10.8 million for Seattle area homeless initiatives at their Home Shows at Seattle's Safeco Field on Aug. 8 and 10. These shows were the band's first hometown shows in 5 years. The band partnered with over 170 local businesses, philanthropic partners, and individuals who will be distributing nearly $7.8 million to local organizations who are fighting homelessness.
Pearl Jam's guitarist, Stone Gossard, said, “From the start, we hoped businesses, foundations and individuals would see themselves in this work.” “The Home Shows initiative is about bringing the issue of homelessness closer to all of us -- increasing our understanding of a complex issue, our empathy for our neighbors experiencing homelessness, and our resolve for working together. We’re proud of what our city has done. Now we need to stay inspired. There’s a lot more to do.”
The target areas for the funds that the Home Shows raised are: diversion, outreach, engagement, support, system change, and housing. The nearly $11 million that was raised came from ticket sales, merchandise sales, donations, and money raised by participating local businesses.
