Peter Gabriel Reveals Release Date for New Album 'I/O'

Back in March, Peter Gabriel announced a new album called I/O and committed to releasing one new single during the full moon of each month. Now, Gabriel has finally revealed a proper release date for I/O. The album marks his first album of new material in over two decades.

The new album is out December 1 and features contributions from Brian Eno, XL Recordings owner Richard Russell, guitarist David Rhodes, bassist Tony Levin, drummer Manu Katché, pianist Tom Cawley, and others. Gabriel shared his first I/O single, “Panopticom,” back in January, marking his first new song since 2016.

“After a years-worth of full moon releases, I’m very happy to see all these new songs back together on the good ship I/O and ready for their journey out into the world,” Gabriel said of his new album in a press release. He has allegedly been working on I/O for the past 20 years. It is his first album of all-new material since 2002’s Up.

Notably, I/O has two mixes of each song: a "Bright-side Mix" and a "Dark-side Mix." In total, the mixes amount to 24 new tracks. The “Bright-Side” mixes were handled by Mark “Spike” Stent, and the “Dark-Side” mixes were executed by Tchad Blake. A third Dolby Atmos mix – aka the “In-Side Mix” – was handled by Hans-Martin Buff, and will be included with the three-disc version of I/O.

“We have two of the greatest mixers in the world in Tchad and Spike and they definitely bring different characters to the songs,” Gabriel said. “Tchad is very much a sculptor building a journey with sound and drama, Spike loves sound and assembling these pictures, so he’s more of a painter.”
