Pop-Infused Musical Take on 'Romeo & Juliet' to Open on Broadway
A pop-infused musical take on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is coming to Broadway this fall after finding success in Toronto and thriving in London's West End since 2019.
The musical, titled & Juliet, is “a multi-generational story of self-discovery, empowerment and love” that envisions what would happen if Juliet did not die at the end of her story. Her journey is soundtracked by popular songs written by record producer and songwriter Max Martin and collaborators. They include Kelly Clarkson's “Since U Been Gone,” “Roar” by Katy Perry, Britney Spears' “…Baby One More Time," “Larger Than Life” by Backstreet Boys, Celine Dion's “That’s the Way It Is," and “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” by Justin Timberlake.
& Juliet begins previews at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on October 28, with an opening planned for November 17. The production will conclude in Toronto on August 14. If interested in seeing the show in Canada before it heads to the Big Apple, you can buy tickets here.
Featuring a book penned by Schitt’s Creek writer David West, the musical is directed by Luke Sheppard and choreographed by Jennifer Weber. The production is produced by Martin, Tim Headington, Theresa Steele Page, Jenny Petersson, Martin Dodd, and Eva Price. The cast will include Lorna Courtney as Juliet, Paulo Szot (South Pacific) as Lance, Betsy Wolfe (Falsettos) as Anne Hathaway, Stark Sands (Kinky Boots) as Shakespeare, Justin David Sullivan as May, Melanie La Barrie as Nurse, Ben Jackson Walker as Romeo, and Philippe Arroyo as Francois.
When & Juliet opens on Theatre Row, it won't be the only musical in Times Square inspired by hit pop songs. Six: the Musical is also a show that transferred from the West End and is inspired by various pop divas (such as Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, and Adele). It is a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII presented as a pop concert. The musical has been running on Broadway since October 3, 2020.
