Prince's Estate Sues Piracy Network

Prince's estate, along with Paisley Park Enterprises, filed a lawsuit last week in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis claiming that a European network of bootleggers is selling Prince music.

The music includes the concert he performed at Paisley Park in Atlanta a week before his death on April 21, 2016.

The suit alleges that the defendants, operating out of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, are "an interrelated group of bootleggers who are ... selling, distributing, and trafficking ... bootlegs of unreleased studio recordings of Prince music and unauthorized recordings of live Prince performances."

The suit alleges copyright infringement, not only of Prince's music but also his likeness and other iconic imagery. They seek to put a stop to the illegal operation as well as monetary damages. The suit is asking for $2 million from the defendants for each trademark violation.

A copyright attorney, not involved in the case, believes collecting monetary damages are slim to none, despite the evidence.
