Rare Ella Fitzgerald Recording 'The Lost Berlin Tapes’ Set for First-Ever Release
A rare Ella Fitzgerald live recording from 1962, The Lost Berlin Tapes, is set to be released this October.
The Lost Berlin Tapes, which was recorded at Berlin’s Sportpalast, captures the concert that took place two years after Fitzgerald's Berlin show that yielded Ella in Berlin: Mack the Knife. Fitzgerald was accompanied by pianist Paul Smith, bassist Wilfred Middlebrooks, and drummer Stan Levey.
Verve Records founder and Fitzgerald’s manager Norman Granz found the tapes unopened within his private collection. Now, those tapes will be released on vinyl, CD, and digitally.
The Lost Berlin Tapes is available for preorder now and will be released on Oct. 2. The recording of "Mack the Knife" is out now.
