Shakira to Release New Single 'Don’t Wait Up' This Friday

Shakira has announced the release of a new single: "Don't Wait Up." The song is dropping this Friday, July 16 and will be Shakira's first English-language single in five years, following 2016’s “Try Anything.”

"Don't Wait Up" will also be the lead single from her 12th studio album, which is expected to be an English-heavier album. On Tuesday (July 13), Shakira announced her return and the new song with a wipe of her social media accounts, then posting a teaser image of a cell phone text conversation to Instagram. The texts and hashtag in the caption include her new song's title.

Before her social media stunt, Shakira previously teased the release of the single last month, when she revealed to Vogue Mexico a music video was in the works. She's also been teasing time in the studio, posting a group photo with music producers The Monsters & Strangerz (Halsey, Camila Cabello) and Andrew Watt (Miley Cyrus, Rita Ora). Another photo that she posted to social media showed her with producer Ian Kirkpatrick (Dua Lipa, Selena Gomez).

The last grand public appearance Shakira made was during the 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show, when she co-headlined with Jennifer Lopez. Recently, Shakira's been focusing more on Spanish-language releases, like her 2020 collaboration with Anuel AA “Me Gusta” and several collaborations with Latin superstar Maluma.
