Solange Composes Original Score for New York City Ballet
Solange Knowles - the younger sister of Beyoncé - has composed a score for the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center.
According to the New York Times, her piece for a chamber ensemble will accompany a ballet choreographed by Gianna Reisen. Solange’s music will be performed by some of her collaborators as well as members of the esteemed New York City Ballet Orchestra.
Solange and Reisen’s work is set to premiere on Wednesday, September 28, at New York’s Lincoln Center. Additional performances will happen on October 1, 8, 11, and 16 as well as May 2, 11, 13, 17, and 18. The first show is part of the New York City Ballet’s annual Fall Fashion Gala, which pairs choreographers with designers. Solange and Reisen’s performance will feature costumes by Alejandro Gómez Palomo of Palomo Spain.
According to ET, this exciting project makes Solange the first Black woman, as well as the second woman of color, to compose a score of a production by the New York City Ballet. The first woman of color to do it was Lido Pimienta: a Colombian-Canadian artist who had her work premiere during the 2021 Fall Fashion Gala.
In other Solange news, it was reported in June that she collaborated with Standing On the Corner for a short film called Passage. Back in March, the director's cut of her 2019 visual album When I Get Home was added to the Criterion Channel.
