Steve Lacy Drops First New Single Since 2022
Steve Lacy has shared his first new single in three years. It's called "Nice Shoes" and was written and produced by the artist himself.
The track is a lusty, techno-infused romp that sees Lacy singing about the connections in his life. "If I, if I had a dollar for the friends I would f---
I could buy a pair of really nice shoes," he croons in the song's opening seconds. Switching between witty, unfiltered observations and vulnerability, Lacy sings about his desire for romance while being overwhelmed by restless thoughts. Though Lacy claims all he needs is his “guitar and serotonin,” his usual expressive guitar work is hard to find on “Nice Shoes;” That is, until the last minute of the song, where Lacy slows the beat down and adds a muted electric guitar and light vocal harmonies.

In an interview with Rolling Stone’s Jeff Ihaza, Lacy called his new song “a ‘trailer’ for this new moment in his career.” Elsewhere in the interview, he discussed a forthcoming new album called Oh Yeah? “This one has taken a lot of time and thought,” he told Ihaza of the self-produced project. “I keep using the word ‘design.’ It feels like fully designing a new language for myself.” According to Genius, the album is not yet finished, and no release date has been announced.
"Nice Shoes" comes after a much-needed hiatus for Lacy after copious amounts of success. He won a Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album for his sophomore album, Gemini Rights. The 2022 full-length housed the biggest song of Lacy’s career to date: “Bad Habit.”
While "Bad Habit" catapulted Lacy and his work into the mainstream, it didn't come without some problems. During one Steve Lacy concert in particular, a moment of disappointment arose when fans primarily knew only the TikTok-popularized portion of "Bad Habit", and not the rest of the lyrics. This led to Lacy pausing the song and calling out the audience, who largely remained silent when prompted to sing the missing parts, according to a viral video.
Lacy recently called out his fanbase on an Instagram post. “Lowkey.. i aint dropping another album till yall go appreciate this one like yall needed to,” Lacy wrote in May referencing Gemini Rights. “Go appreciate this some more then maybe just maybe we can talk about my next one.”
While he hasn’t shared new music since 2022, Lacy did join the inaugural Re:SET concert series as one of its headliners back in 2023.
