Texas Rangers' Spring Training Field Dedicated to Charley Pride

On March 14, 2021, the Texas Rangers had a dedication ceremony in which they renamed Field 2 at their spring training complex in Surprise, Arizona to "Charley Pride Field."

The field was renamed in honor of Charley Pride, the legendary baseball player-turned-country singer. Pride was a pitcher for the Negro and Minor Leagues throughout the 1950s before embarking on a music career that lasted over 60 years.

Pride passed away on December 12, 2020 from complications related to COVID-19. Before his death, Pride was an investor in the group that bought the Rangers from Tom Hicks in 2010. He frequently visited the Rangers' spring training facilities, and was even known to have worked out with the team.

The Rangers announced the dedication on Sunday with a tweet. “Introducing Charley Pride Field! You are greatly missed,” the caption reads. The Twitter video shows the unveiling of the new sign.

One of Pride's final live performances was singing the National Anthem in July 2020 at the Rangers' new Globe Life Field. Although the stadium was empty due to the pandemic, it was the first-ever game played at the new field.
