'The Color Purple' Musical Trailer: Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino, & H.E.R. Star in Epic First Glimpse
The Color Purple movie musical is almost here! After it was announced in 2021 and 2022 that H.E.R. and Jon Batiste would be starring, a new trailer showing the artists – as well as performances from Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino – have dropped.
On Monday (May 22), Warner Bros. Pictures debuted the first trailer for the new adaptation of the Alice Walker novel and the Broadway musical it inspired, which was previously released as a non-musical film in 1985 directed by Steven Spielberg. Spielberg is returning as a producer for this film, alongside Oprah Winfrey (who starred as Celie in the original film).
In this version, directed by Blitz Bazawule, Fantasia Barrino plays Celie in her feature film debut, while Danielle Brooks plays Sofia, Halle Bailey plays young Nettie Harris, H.E.R. plays Squeak, and Jon Batiste takes on the role of Grady. The rest of the star-studded cast includes Taraji P. Henson, Louis Gossett Jr., Corey Hawkins, David Alan Grier, Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Ciara, and Deon Cole.
A press release for the trailer calls the film a “bold new take on the beloved classic” about “the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond.” Marcus Gardley wrote The Color Purple‘s script based on the book of the same name and the musical by Marsha Norman. Other producers include Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones. The Color Purple is slated to hit theaters on December 25.
