'The Village Voice' to Return in 2021

New York City’s alternative weekly newspaper The Village Voice is making its return next month just two years after it closed in 2018, according to The New York Times.

Brian Calle, the current owner of LA Weekly and CEO of Street Media, recently acquired the publication with the plan to relaunch The Village Voice digitally in January 2021, with quarterly print issues to follow.

The Village Voice was founded in 1955 by Dan Wolf, Ed Fancher, John Wilcock, and Norman Mailer, and served as a platform for the creative community of New York City for over 60 years.

To relaunch the paper, Calle has brought on former Voice editor Bob Baker to serve as a senior editor and content coordinator. Calle also intends to bring other former staff members back to the publication. According to Calle, the new version of the paper "will honor the traditions of The Village Voice of yesteryear."

The purchase and relaunch of The Village Voice follows Calle's acquisition of LA Weekly in 2017, which was plagued by controversy as Calle took the paper in a dramatically different direction.
