Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste, & H.E.R. Win Awards at 2021 Oscars
Glenn Close shaking it to "Da Butt" wasn't the only cool musical moment to happen at the 2021 Oscars. During Hollywood's biggest night, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste won awards for Best Original Score for Pixar's Soul while H.E.R. took home a golden statue for her song "Fight For You" from Judas and the Black Messiah.
While the 2021 Oscars did not allow for live musical performances because of COVID-19 guidelines (all performances were pre-recorded and played during the pre-show), the ceremony honored its tradition of handing out music-related awards live. The first to win for Best Original Score were Reznor, Ross, and Batiste.
Their score for Soul beat out music by Emile Mosseri (Minari), Terence Blanchard (Da 5 Bloods), James Newton Howard (News of the World), and another Reznor/Ross collaboration: the score for David Fincher’s latest film Mank.
Reznor, Ross, and Batiste’s work on Soul also won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score this year. The trio appeared on stage together at the Oscars, but Ross and Reznor refrained from making acceptance speeches during the ceremony. In remarks taped a few minutes later, they both thanked their wives, children, and the Academy.
Soon after, H.E.R. received an Oscar for Best Original Song. Her collaboration with Dernst Emile II and Tiara Thomas, “Fight for You,” won over songs from The Trial of the Chicago 7 (“Hear My Voice”), Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (“Husavik”), The Life Ahead (Italian: La vita davanti a sé) (“Io Sì (Seen)”), and One Night in Miami (“Speak Now”).
H.E.R.'s win was a historic one, as it made her the second Black woman to win the award - the first being Irene Cara in 1983. "I am so, so, so grateful, not only to win but to be a part of such an important, important story,” H.E.R. said in her acceptance speech, referring to the movie her song was a part of: Judas and the Black Messiah.
After thanking loved ones in her acceptance speech, H.E.R. called on musicians and artists to tell the truth in their work. Before winning the Oscar for Best Original Song, she gave a dynamite performance of "Fight For You" from the roof of the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.
