Arcade Fire to Return with First New Song in 5 Years, 'The Lightning I, II'

Arcade Fire are making their return with “The Lightning I, II,” their first new single in three years and first piece of original music since 2017. The song is set to arrive this Thursday, March 17.

Throughout March, the band have been teasing their comeback. The announcement of the upcoming single follows a brief snippet of new music secretly appearing on the contact page of Arcade Fire's website. (To listen, click on the eye illustration in the bottom right corner.)

Before that, the band sent mysterious postcards to fans. The postcards read “We missed you.” Since then, they've also released a similar message and graphic on Twitter - complete with chords for fans to play with.

Arcade Fire’s last album was 2017’s Everything Now. In 2019, the band shared a cover of “Baby Mine” for Disney's Dumbo live-action remake. More recently, the band contributed to the Headspace app with the 45-minute track “Memories of the Age of Anxiety.” Despite their involvement in the music industry over the last five years and promises of a new album since 2020, the band was quiet when it came to releasing original music that wasn't made for a specific event or project.

In related news, Arcade Fire made a big return with a performance at New Orleans’ Toulouse Theatre yesterday. It was a last-minute "pay what you can" show to support Ukraine via Plus1’s Ukraine Relief Fund.
