Bon Iver has dropped a music video for the Sable, Fable track “Day One.” Directed by Jos Diaz Contreras, the short is set in an alternate future where Bon Iver has announced his retirement and must be replaced by an imitator. Among the hopeful auditionees are Saltburn actor Jacob Elordi, recent Emmy-winner Cristin Milioti, St. Vincent, and a horde of other unknown actors.
The song’s performers also make appearances in the visual. Featured artists Dijon and Flock of Dimes’ Jenn Wasner show up to the casting call. Additionally, Justin Vernon himself shows face.

According to a real casting call on Casting Networks, the music video was shot in Los Angeles on September 4. The breakdown looks for "men and women wearing a "Bon Iver" costume (flannel shirt, jeans, beanie, guitar, etc)." This technically means the unknown actors in the video were genuinely auditioning to be Bon Iver impersonators.
Cristin Milioti's appearance in the video is notable, considering her relationship with Bon Iver goes some way back. In 2021, she covered his 22, A Million song “715 Creeks.” More recently, she appeared in character as the mother of his child in a behind-the-scenes book that accompanied Sable, Fable.
The new video follows another high-concept short for the LP, in which Vernon plays a dual limo driver and divorce attorney soundtracked by the album’s “From.” Sable, Fable was released back in April, and is the fifth studio album shared by Bon Iver.
