Sometimes negative experiences lead to positive ones. Such is the case with Keke Palmer being involved in Usher's latest music video, "Boyfriend". Palmer acts, dances, and even sings in the visual, which comes after - and is a sly nod to - the recent drama between her and former partner Darius Jackson.
The visual stars a glowing Palmer having a night out with her gal pals and hanging with Usher, who taunts in the song’s lyrics: “Somebody said that your boyfriend is looking for me, that’s cool / He should know I’m pretty easy to find / Just look for me wherever he sees you.”
Midway through, the video pauses to show the Nope star and friends listening to Usher’s 2001 hit “U Remind Me” in an elevator. Keke exclaims, “I love this song… do you remember where you were when you first heard this?” and sings along to it. Palmer then leads a suave dance break in a casino - dressed just like Usher, of course - then wakes up in bed to answer a FaceTime call from the R&B star. That’s where she drops the biggest diss toward Jackson: “S--t, I’m so tired… I am a mother, after all,” she says, winking at the camera.
The Palmer-Jackson drama all started back in July, after Palmer had attended one of Usher's Las Vegas residency shows. Once a video surfaced online of Palmer being serenaded by Usher, Jackson took to Twitter and wrote in a now-deleted tweet: "It’s the outfit tho.. you a mom.” (Palmer shares a six-month-old son with Jackson.)
After fans started to defend Palmer and her choice of black bodysuit and sheer covering combo, Jackson tweeted, "We live in a generation where a man of the family doesn’t want the wife & mother to his kids to showcase booty cheeks to please others & he gets told how much of a hater he is. This is my family & my representation. I have standards & morals to what I believe. I rest my case.”
Neither Palmer nor Jackson chose to comment on the status of their relationship until yesterday (August 16), when it was revealed by multiple media outlets they had broken up. Between the start of the drama and the Usher video, Palmer capitalized off the public shaming; posting TikToks and selling merch that took subtle jabs at Jackson's comments.
Palmer took to Instagram following the new music video's release to thank Usher for “encouraging me and seeing me as the entertainer I am.”
“I know I’m a gUrL but when I watched your videos, I never wanted to be the girl in them, I wanted to be YOU,” she added in her post. “Thank you for making a dream come true.”
