Kelly Clarkson & Dolly Parton to Release ‘9 to 5’ Duet

After the song premiered in the documentary Still Working 9 to 5 at SXSW last spring, Kelly Clarkson has finally revealed the long-awaited release of her duet version of “9 to 5” with Dolly Parton. The song is out next Friday (September 9).

“I’m so excited to finally announce the new version of ‘9 to 5’ I recorded with the legendary @dollyparton is coming out on September 9th!!” Clarkson wrote on social media. “Thank you @shanemcanally for making this dream a reality and putting this project together.”

The duet version, which was produced by Shane McAnally, Sasha Alex Sloan, and King Henry, was specifically created for Still Working 9 to 5. The documentary looks back on the 40th anniversary of the classic 1980 film and the continuing fight for women’s rights and gender equality. It features interviews with Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dabney Coleman, Allison Janney, Rita Moreno, and more. Still Working 9 to 5 will be released Sept. 16.

“I was blown away when I heard what Shane had done with my song,” Parton said. “This arrangement shows how differently a song can be done and the story can be told in a whole new way. A special thanks to Steve Summers for getting the ball rolling on this whole musical venture.”

Around the time of the film's SXSW premiere, Parton teased her "9 to 5" duet with Kelly during an interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “You did a great job on that too. I love how you took that and just made it your own and I got a chance to sing background for a change!” she told her collaborator. “But I’m really proud of that rendition of it and I think, hopefully, it’ll do well for us. It’s great in the documentary.”

Fans of The Kelly Clarkson Show may recall that “9 to 5” was the first-ever Kellyoke song, when the talk show premiered back in 2019. You can pre-save the new duet version here.

Speaking of Kellyoke, Clarkson is currently taking the musical segment on tour across the United States to welcome others to perform a duet of "Since U Been Gone." The best singers will be picked to duet with Clarkson for real on The Kelly Clarkson Show. The bus' next stop will be Dallas on September 3, then Los Angeles on September 7. Clarkson is also accepting TikTok submissions with the hashtag #KellyokeSearch.
