Oscars 2024: Billie Eilish & Ludwig Göransson Win, Becky G, Jon Batiste, & More Perform

The Oscars are the biggest night for movies, but yesterday's ceremony (March 11) also proved to be a great celebration of music. Billie Eilish (with Finneas) and Ludwig Göransson won awards for their achievements in film music, while Eilish, Becky G, Jon Batiste, Osage Tribal Singers, and even Ryan Gosling performed their Best Original Song nominations for the audience.

Starting with Eilish and Finneas, the sibling duo started off the night giving a heartfelt rendition of their Barbie ballad "What Was I Made For?" A full orchestra accompanied them about midway through the track. They then won the Oscar for Best Original Song, making them the two youngest two-time winners in Oscar history (at 22 and 26, respectively). They previously won for their James Bond track "No Time to Die."

“I had a nightmare about this last night,” Eilish said at the top of her acceptance speech, before bursting into laughter. Her and Finneas thanked Barbie director Greta Gerwig, their parents, and more during their time onstage.

As for Best Original Score, Ludwig Göransson took home the prize, beating out John Williams (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Jerskin Fendrix (Poor Things), Laura Karpman (American Fiction), and the late Robbie Robertson (Killers of the Flower Moon). Like Eilish and Finneas, Göransson also became a two-time winner of his category: he previously won an Oscar in 2019 for his Black Panther score.

In his speech, Göransson thanked his parents for giving him instruments instead of video games, as well as director Christopher Nolan for inviting him to score the film in the first place. “Christopher, it was your idea to use the violin in the score, and it allowed me to work with my wonderful wife and acclaimed violinist Serena McKinney,” said Göransson.

As for live performances (besides Eilish and Finneas'), Composer Scott George and the Osage Tribal Singers performed a rendition of their Killers of the Flower Moon tune “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People).” George and the Osage Singers and Dancers dressed in traditional attire for the live rendition, with over a dozen members singing onstage together while collectively banging a drum.

Jon Batiste played a piano and sang his American Symphony piece "It Never Went Away" for the crowd, while Becky G and a chorus of young girls sang "The Fire Inside" from the movie Flamin' Hot. But perhaps the most highly-anticipated and talked-about performance of the night came from Ryan Gosling. The celeb, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, sang his Barbie song "I'm Just Ken" for the Dolby Theater audience.

Gosling wore a glittery hot pink suit to the stage. His performance was complete with many background dancers (several of whom were actors from
Barbie), a cameo from Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, a shot of the camera person's "manly hand," and a brief sing-along portion with Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, America Ferrera, and Emma Stone. Later, when Emma Stone accepted the Oscar for Best Actress, she joked that Gosling's performance made the back of her dress break.
