After the success of "Espresso," Sabrina Carpenter is trying to go two-for-two on dropping the Song of the Summer.
After teasing a new release all this week, Carpenter shared a new single called "Manchild" Thursday night (May, June 5). The Short n' Sweet pop princess co-wrote “Manchild” alongside frequent collaborator Amy Allen and Jack Antonoff, with Antonoff also handling production duties. In terms of sound, the track shares homogenous opening synths as "Please Please Please," and features some twangy, country-esque vocals from Carpenter.

The bubbly-yet-scathing bop features withering couplets like “Did you just say you’re finished? Didn’t know we started/It’s all so familiar, baby, what do you call it/Stupid, or is it slow?” Celeb Bus Central reported one lyric in particular - "I choose to blame your mom" - was displayed on a pair of tights Carpenter wore during her recent April Fool's Day show. At the time, fans simply thought it was a joke.
"i wrote manchild on a random tuesday with amy and jack not too long after finishing short n’ sweet and it ended up being the best random tuesday of my life," Carpenter told fans on social media. "not only was it so fun to write, but this song became to me something I can look back on that will score the mental montage to the very confusing and fun young adult years of life. it sounds like the song embodiment of a loving eye roll and it feels like a never ending road trip in the summer ! hence why i wanted to give it to you now- so you can stick your head out the car window and scream it all summer long!" Carpenter ended the note with a thank you to fans, and also shouted out men for "testing her."
The campy music video Sabrina released to accompany the song is certainly one to be talked about. At first, the visual seems like a cutesy desert odyssey where a hitchhiking Sabrina goes on adventures with various men. But as the video continues, the moments the viewer witnesses become increasingly chaotic and fever dream-like. A shark in a swimming pool, a crane machine with plates of food inside, a book sticking into a tree like a ninja star, and demonic sheep watching Sabrina while she sleeps are just some of the many nonsensical images to be found.
In February, Carpenter released a deluxe version of her 2024 album, Short n’ Sweet. That same month, she also took home two trophies at the Grammy Awards: Best Pop Vocal Album, for Short n’ Sweet, and Best Pop Solo Performance, for “Espresso." She also performed a medley of “Espresso” and the Antonoff-produced “Please Please Please.”
Carpenter takes the stage at Primavera Sound Barcelona on June 6. The pop singer is also set to headline at Austin City Limits and Lollapalloza, after which she’ll kick off another run of North American tour dates supported by Ravyn Lenae, Amber Mark, and Olivia Dean.
