The Weeknd to Release New Song 'Take My Breath' This Friday

After sharing a nearly two-minute preview of a new song after midnight Monday (August 2), The Weeknd posted a Tokyo Olympics ad with the same song, captioned with the release date of his newest single: "Take My Breath."

Fortunately, fans won't have to hold their breath too long for the release. "Take My Breath" is scheduled to drop this Friday, August 6. The initial teaser for the song was titled “The Dawn Is Coming,” and "Take My Breath" will serve as the first cut off The Weeknd's next album cycle post–After Hours.

The Weeknd previously announced this new era at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards on May 23. "I just want to say the After Hours are done and the dawn is coming," he said after winning Top Hot 100 Song presented by Rockstar for "Blinding Lights."

“f--k it … IT STARTS TONIGHT,” the Canadian superstar tweeted just before sharing the two-minute preview of his new single. In a new interview with Mark Anthony Green for GQ, The Weeknd stated the upcoming record is “the album (he’s) always wanted to make." Green described the album as “Quincy Jones meets Giorgio Moroder meets the best-night-of-your-f---ing-life party records.”

In the wake of After Hours, The Weeknd has released several more songs, including “Missed You,” “Nothing Compares,” and “Final Lullaby” on a deluxe edition of the record, as well as remixes with Rosalía (“Blinding Lights”), Ariana Grande (“Save Your Tears”), and Kenny G (“In Your Eyes”). He also performed the Super Bowl LV Halftime Show and famously spoke out against the Recording Academy when After Hours was excluded from the Grammys despite the record's success.

In other The Weeknd news, the singer is currently prepping his new HBO series The Idol. Casting calls for the female lead, "Ruby," have recently gone up across the internet.
