Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 'Long After Dark' to Receive Reissue with Bonus Tracks

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 1982 album, Long After Dark, is receiving a deluxe reissue. The new version will include twelve bonus tracks – including seven that were previously unreleased.

The reissue will be shared on October 18. Ahead of the reissue, the Petty Legacy archives will share a series of unearthed songs and videos from 1982-83. The first is a 1982 version of “Straight Into Darkness,” shot for French television by director Alan Bibby. You can watch the video for it below.

Other bonus cuts were taken from French TV sessions, including the Everly Brothers-influenced “Keeping Me Alive” and an alternate version of “Straight Into Darkness.” Long After Dark (Deluxe Edition) will also come with liner notes from rock journalist David Fricke with commentary from Jimmy Iovine and Cameron Crowe.

“There was some music recorded for Long After Dark that didn’t get on the record, that I thought would’ve made it a better album,” the late Petty is quoted as saying in a press release. “I left off… four things that I liked quite a bit. And probably a few more written that never even got in the door.”

Besides "Straight Into Darkness," notable inclusions in the expanded collection are Petty’s version of “Never Be You” (which became a #1 country hit for Rosanne Cash), the pop-esque “Don’t Make Me Walk the Line,” and an uptempo version of “Ways to Be Wicked.”

Last year, Petty’s estate celebrated what would have been his 73rd birthday with Mojo (Extra Mojo Edition), a reissue of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 2010 blues album. Pre-orders for Long After Dark (Deluxe Edition) are ongoing.
