Doja Cat (real name: Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini) is a product of two things: the digital age, and the female hip-hop trailblazers who paved the way for her to run. She's funny, she's sexy, she's extremely talented, she's very well-versed in meme culture, and she's an artist in every sense of the word. She's also got a brand new album on the horizon, and before she drops it, we'd like to make a Top 10 list of her best hits so far.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Doja Cat started out how many new artists do these days: on SoundCloud. Her song "So High" caught the attention of Kemosabe and RCA Records, with which she signed a joint record deal. She released her debut EP Purrr! in 2014. After a hiatus from music and the uneventful rollout of her debut studio album, Amala (2018), Doja Cat earned viral success as an internet meme with her 2018 single "MOOO!". If you haven't heard that, it's a novelty song about Doja...being a cow. It may be simple and very silly, but trust us when we say it's strangely earwormy. It's 100% pure Doja Cat absurdity.
Pretending to be a cow gained her some popularity, so Doja took advantage of the situation by releasing Hot Pink in 2019, and her critically-acclaimed Planet Her in 2020. Now, she's got a Grammy Award, five Billboard Music Awards, five American Music Awards, and four MTV Video Music Awards. She was also recently named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time (2023).
Without further ado, here are the 10 Doja Cat songs we think are simply purr-fect.
10. "Rules"
This Hot Pink jam never gets old to us. With a wild west-esque guitar riff and bouncy pace, it's easy to get sucked into the world Doja offers us in "Rules." This song is all about the boundaries Doja enforces with her suitors. She's all for money and sex, but doesn't need any commitments. Relationships don't "butter her biscuit."
The vocal energy Doja Cat puts into the verses on this song is intoxicating. We particularly adore the bars, "Bad yellow b---h with her eye on the prize
But n-----, I ain't no minion / Millions, thousands, billions / Bobs on me like Dylan, blondes on me like Hilton." Additionally, we feel the music video for this song describes its vibes pretty well. It sees Doja as a badass half cat / half human mafia boss who counts money, burns cars, and, well...laps up milk.
9. "Attention"
Doja's latest single, which is set to be featured on her upcoming album First of All. We feel "Attention" shows a more layered, detail-oriented, and masterful side to the hip-hop artist's work. She's stated on Twitter the kind of music she produced in Planet Her and Hot Pink were just cash grabs. "Attention" unveils a new level of maturity to her noise, and we can't wait to see what's coming next from the new LP.
Anyways, "Attention" infuses hip-hop, jazz, and Asian-inspired sounds to tell the story of Doja's self-love. She disses the people who, in recent times, have judged her appearance. She also proclaims that she doesn't need love in order to thrive: she just needs attention. Each verse in the song is meaty with rhymes, and the energy of this bop gives us sophisticated 90s rap vibes.
8. "Streets"
"Streets" is a fan favorite track from Hot Pink that we think deserves more love. It probably has some of the best trap production Doja has put forward, and has a very atmospheric, mysterious, sultry, and shady vibe. This song samples the instrumental to the 2003 track titled “Streets Is Callin'” by the R&B band B2K, hence the song’s title name.
Doja sings about her woes from a previously failed relationship in the first verse, and details her reasons on returning to her partner in the second verse. Doja's vocal delivery is also notably in a lower register, which makes this track standout as a more serious and dramatic one from her discography. “Streets” has also seen a surge in streams after going viral on TikTok.
7. "Ain't S--t"
Has this ever happened to you one, two, three times too much: when a guy you're dating doesn't put any effort into the relationship and you end up acting like his mom? That's the kind of relatable woman frustration touched upon in "Ain't S--t." In this raw and rampage-filled cut, Doja shares her thoughts about how men can be aggravating, waste your time, raid your fridge, and act superior when really they lack common sense.
Despite having no music video and not cracking the Billboard Hot 100, "Ain't S--t" has become another fan favorite off Planet Her and remains pretty trendy on TikTok. The song also shows off Doja's talent with vocal inflections pretty perfectly. While being animated but serious at the same time, Doja executes this song while using different ranges, cadences, and tones of her voice. We particularly live for her sound when she exclaims, "You should have paid my rent, go get a f---in' job!" This song is pretty cathartic for any girl going through a heartbreak.
6. "You Right (feat. The Weeknd)"
The third single released from Planet Her, "You Right" is an upbeat-yet-somber bop about being with a partner but having feelings for someone else. This twinkly and scandalous tune has Doja taking on a more raspy voice, and is the perfect work to feature The Weeknd. Doja had wanted to collaborate with the "Blinding Lights" singer for awhile. However, she wasn't sure which Planet Her track would be best to host the feature. "You Right" was originally meant to be solo and had already been completed with two verses, but The Weeknd was so obsessed with it, the production team took off one of Doja's verses to squeeze him in. (An extended version of “You Right” was then added to the deluxe edition of Planet Her, wherein Doja has an extra verse.)
We also love the spiritual music video for "You Right," with all its celestial, astrological, and tarot card imagery. Doja Cat opens the visual with a Libra-inspired outfit, and The Weeknd basically acts as Aquarius with his vase of water.
5. "Need to Know"
We love how spacy and synthy Planet Her's "Need to Know" sounds. It was released as the second promo single off the album, and peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100: becoming Doja Cat's fourth Top 10 song. Doja manages to show off both her trademark soft vocals and animated inflections in this horny romp. We also adore Doja's blue-skinned alien look in single promo posters and the music video.
"Need to Know" is an extremely sex positive banger, and while there's not much of a message to the song besides wanting to get down and dirty, there's a lot of quippy bars to unpack. Some of our favorites include "What's your size? / Add, subtract, divide" (a reference to the pickup line: “Add you and me, subtract the clothes, divide your legs, and pray we don’t multiply), the Kenny Loggins-approved "We could do it to your favorite song / Take a ride into the danger zone", and "Itchin' for me like an ugly sweater / Need it in me like a Chuck E. need cheddar."
4. "Woman"
A groovy afrobeats song that embraces the feminine devine. Quite appropriately, "Woman" is the opening track of Planet Her and describes all the ways in which women play a role in society. Doja also respects the feminine power within herself, and briefly touches upon how the patriarchy tries to control women ("They wanna pit us against each other / When we succeedin' for no reasons / They wanna see us end up like we Regina on Mean Girls).
We love how the first half of the song is more flowy and graceful as Doja tries to attract a man and remarks about the power of a woman's womb. Then, in the second half, Doja gears up with some assertive rapping about the underbelly of femininity and all the problems women face due to men. But ultimately, she proves women always come out on top and can beat the game of the patriarchy. "Woman" is also considered a big commercial success for Doja Cat, reaching #7 on the Billboard Hot 100.
3. "Say So"
This song can be considered Doja Cat's big break. Groovy and disco-influenced, "Say So" is the biggest hit off Hot Pink. Despite not being released as an official single until the song was sent to radio months after release, “Say So” gained the most traction on the album due to its popularity on TikTok. Doja's songs "MOOO!" and "Juicy" also had similar TikTok success stories, but "Say So" was the first of Doja's TikTok hits to truly break into the mainstream.
On "Say So," Doja softly sings about wanting her friend to stop “beating ‘round the bush” and confess their love to her. Originally, the song peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. But once Doja created a remix of the song with her idol – the one and only Nicki Minaj – the new version of "Say So" shot right up to the #1 spot. It marked both Doja and Nicki’s first #1 hit on the chart.
2. "Kiss Me More (feat. SZA)"
Of course "Kiss Me More" would be high on the list: it's Doja Cat's Grammy-winning collab with SZA! It also peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the time of its release. Soft, pillowy, and sweet, "Kiss Me More" is a romantic little bop about young love. Like "Say So," there's also some vintage disco-y sounds to it, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a radio station staple.
Producer Yeti Beats said it best when talking about the song to Variety: "Doja is the best hook writer I know. Her music is fun, witty, original and authentic. The subject, wanting kisses, is simple and relatable. At a time of little social interaction, this song provided a fun, light-hearted escape." While Doja's bits are cutesy, SZA's verse is a hardcore R&B tidbit about how she dodged a bullet by not pursuing a relationship with a lover. We'll never forget the moment when Doja and SZA won their Grammy for Best Pop Duo Performance. Avril Lavigne presenting, SZA making her way to the stage on crutches, Lady Gaga holding the train of her gown, and Doja Cat finally showing up after taking the "fastest piss" of her life made the moment almost as memorable as the song itself.
1. "Get Into It (Yuh)"
We've picked "Get Into It (Yuh)" as our #1 Doja Cat song because while it may not be the most critically or commercially successful tune in her catalogue (it charted on the Billboard Hot 100, but only peaked at #20), we feel it's the bop that shows off her unique personality and rapping skill the most. It's the most Doja Cat of all the Doja Cat songs out there.
First off, "Get Into It (Yuh)" is the most classically hip-hop track on Planet Her. It's got a sick-but-not-overproduced trap beat from Y2K and Sully, and compliments Doja's high-pitched vocals well. It's heavily inspired by the style of Nicki Minaj ("Thank you, Nicki, I love you / Got that big rocket launcher!") and in the last verse of the song, she interpolates the same rapid flow and tone of Nicki from her single “Massive Attack.” In fact, Doja actually asked Minaj if she wanted to be featured in "Get Into It (Yuh)", but Nicki declined only because she felt the song didn't need her magic. When the legendary Nicki Minaj doesn't want to touch your song because of how good it is already, that's when you know it is truly great.
Second, "Get Into It (Yuh)" is tonally campy, fun, and with the digital age: all three things Doja Cat as a person is known for being. The title of the song references a viral video of internet personality Shaydee, in which Megan Thee Stallion’s “Cash Sh--” plays in the background as she exclaims, “Yuh, get into it!” Doja also manages to weave in Ariana Grande's talent, Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You," and Balenciaga throughout the course of the song. Not to mention she spits one of the best superhero-themed bars we've ever heard ("You just wanna party, you just wanna lap dance / You just wanna pop up on these clowns like you're the Batman").
The video for this track shows off even more of her hilarious personality. It sees Doja as a space warrior who saves her kidnapped cat from evil monsters. And she manages to do so through the help of Life Water, dancing soldiers (that hallway march choreography is INSANE), and armor-clad pelvic thrusts. All-in-all, "Get Into It (Yuh)" is a song anyone can get into.
