Tyler, the Creator Surprise-Drops New Album 'Don't Tap the Glass'

Only eight months after releasing his record Chromakopia, Grammy-winning artist Tyler, the Creator has surprise-dropped a new album called Don't Tap the Glass. The project - which features several dance-forward party songs - clocks in at just under half an hour, and was previewed only with a handful of posts teasing its release date (Monday, July 21).

Tyler posted a graphic with a letter about the album to social media. It explains why the project was created, and why Tyler is now encouraging a "more body movement."

"I asked some friends why they don’t dance in public and some said because of the fear of being filmed," Tyler wrote. "I thought damn, a natural form of expression and a certain connection they have with music is now a ghost. It made me wonder how much of our human spirit got killed because of the fear of being a meme, all for having a good time."

After revealing he had a listening party for the album where no phones or cameras were allowed, Tyler said: "Everyone was dancing, moving, expressing, sweating. It was truly beautiful. I played the album front to back twice, it felt like that pent up energy finally got released and we craved the idea of letting more of it out. There was a freedom that filled the room. A ball of energy that might not translate to every speaker that plays this album but man did that room nail it. This album was not made for sitting still. Dancing driving running any type of movement is recommended to maybe understand the spirit of it. Only at full volume."

While full credits have not yet been released yet, Pitchfork reports opener “Big Poe” finds Tyler embodying the titular alter-ego alongside an as-yet-anonymous guest rapper. It also has a sample of Busta Rhymes’ “Pass the Courvoisier Part II,” which featured P. Diddy and Pharrell Williams.

With the release, Tyler has dropped one music video to support the album so far. It's the visual for "STOP PLAYING WITH ME," and it sees the California artist dancing hard in front of two gigantic speakers. It was also directed by Tyler himself.

Tyler, the Creator has always had short rollouts for each of his studio albums, but the drop for Don't Tap the Glass now holds the record for arriving with the least amount of notice. Unlike with his previous LPs, no pre-album singles were shared before Don't Tap the Glass became public.

Tyler remains on tour in support of Chromakopia. He still has shows left to play in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines. He’s also due to headline major North American music festivals including Lollapalooza and Outside Lands. You can find remaining tickets here, as well as re-sale tickets via Ticketmaster.
