10 New Albums to Listen to in July 2023

If you live in the United States, we hope you had a very happy 4th of July! Now that the holiday is over, several artists are resuming with album deliveries. You'll find most of the highly-anticipated ones we've listed below have the word "sun" in the name or start with the letter 'S.' ('S' for summer? Sun? We don't know.) But trust us when we say this hot ol' month is about to be STACKED with some bomb LP drops.

Unsurprisingly, mainstream pop and indie pop will reign during this sunny month. But there's also a couple of alternative, rock, funk, and hip-hop drops that may make you curious. Below are the 10 albums we'll be jamming to as we proceed with our July barbecues, pool parties, and beach trips. As always, the LPs below have been listed in order of their release date.

Sunburn - Dominic Fike

Indie up-and-comer Dominic Fike is returning with his sophomore album Sunburn (aptly titled for the summer season) on July 7. Fike has called the album "very honest," and press releases for the LP have said it consists of songs about "heartbreak and regret, addiction, sex, and jealousy" and it does not "supply listeners with declarations on high from a superstar. Instead, it offers the aching and vulnerable revelations of a young artist still growing and putting their best foot forward."

The most popular single on the album so far is the track "Mona Lisa," which was featured in an advertisement for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and was included on the deluxe version of the film's soundtrack. Other standout singles have included "Dancing in the Courthouse," "Ant Pile," and the tune "Mama's Boy."

I Want It All Right Now - GROUPLOVE

Remember GROUPLOVE? Y'know, that indie-pop Los Angeles band that released the mega hit "Tongue Tied" back in 2011? Well, they're with a new record label now and are preparing to launch their sixth studio album, I Want It All Right Now. With the new support behind them, we're excited to see the direction this upcoming project takes!

I Want It All Right Now is also set for a July 7 release and has been preceded by the singles "All," "Hello," "Eyes," and "Francine" (Hannah Hooper's vocals on that last one are GORGEOUS). We love how each song so far has felt free and casual, but also existential, dramatic, and rockin'!

Speak Now (Taylor's Version) - Taylor Swift

Get ready: Tay Tay's got another new album coming up on July 7! This one is Speak Now (Taylor's Version), which was announced by Swift during one of her Eras Tour dates in May. It will be the third LP released in her Taylor's Version canon, in an effort to reclaim her masters.

No singles from the updated version of Speak Now have been released yet, but we've got a pretty stacked tracklist. Besides all of the songs from the original record, Taylor's Version of Speak Now will feature several new songs "from the vault," including the song "Crumbling Castles" with Paramore's Hayley Williams and the Fall Out Boy team-up "Electric Touch." We're digging the emo band vibes (very appropriate for an album that originally dropped in 2010), and can't wait to get nostalgic over the new and improved Speak Now!

I Inside the Old Year Dying - PJ Harvey

Finally: PJ Harvey is back! I Inside the Old Year Dying is the upcoming tenth studio album by the English singer-songwriter / Grammy-nominated alternative rock musician. It is her first album of new material since The Hope Six Demolition Project (2016), and she served as producer alongside Flood and John Parish.

The lead single, "A Child's Question, August," was shared back in April and "I Inside the Old I Dying" was dropped in June. Despite the upcoming release date of July 7, the LP has already scored some insanely good reviews, with Metacritic giving it an 84 out of 100 – indicating "universal acclaim." There are reports of some atmospheric, subtly disturbing and unidentifiable sounds. But rest assured: they promise to be intriguing and aid to make I Inside the Old Year Dying all the more fascinating.

Supermodels - Claud

We'd say Claud is probably the world's leading non-binary moody indie artist. Their sophomore album Supermodels drops July 14 via Phoebe Bridgers' record label Saddest Factory, and we're so excited to revisit Claud's specific brand of emotional bedroom pop.

The "Wish You Were Gay" singer has teased their upcoming album with the singles "Crumbs," "Wet," "It's Not About You," and our personal fave, "Every F---ing Time." That last one comes with an insanely cute music video that sees Claud and internet comedian Grace Kuhlenschmidt play rockin' bandmates, as well as roommates in a city apartment. The visual was also Claud's directorial debut!

People Just Wanna Have Fun - Kool & the Gang

If you're an old school funk addict, you're not going to want to miss Kool & the Gang's new album that's coming out on July 14! It's called People Just Wanna Have Fun and it arrives just in time for the Grammy-winning band's 60th anniversary.

People Just Wanna Have Fun will be the group's 34th album to date. Following a performance on Good Morning America, they dropped the single "Let's Party" featuring Sha Sha Jones. It's synthy, sexy, and oh-so cool for the summer. And yes: it shows that the "Celebrate," "Ladies Night," and "Get Down On It" band still knows how to get people grooving.

You & I - Rita Ora

Also on July 14, we have Rita Ora's latest project You & I. It will be the third studio album from the English pop singer, and three singles have been shared: "You Only Love Me," "Praising You" (featuring Fatboy Slim), and "Don't Think Twice."

This album will mark Ora’s first in five years. She last dropped Phoenix in 2018. You & I is also the singer-songwriter’s first album since signing with BMG in 2022 (which will see Ora own all her future master recordings and enjoy artistic control in a way she hasn’t had before). The LP is expected to be Ora's most diaristic one yet and will chronicle different chapters of a romantic relationship. You & I was also notably produced by Oak Felder, who's worked with stars like Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keys, and Usher.

Starcatcher - Greta Van Fleet

On July 21, Greta Van Fleet will be sharing their third studio album Starcatcher. It comes just after the up-and-coming rock band opened for Metallica on their recent tour, and has been teased with the singles "Meeting the Master," "The Falling Sky," "Indigo Streak," "Sacred the Thread," and "Farewell for Now.. All of those songs were first played to the public during the Metallica tour; only "Indigo Streak" hasn't had a proper release yet.

Starcatcher will have a narrative structure. According to drummer Danny Wagner, "We had this idea that we wanted to tell these stories to build a universe. We wanted to introduce characters and motifs and these ideas that would come about here and there throughout our careers through this world." Starcatcher also promises to have a more garage band-y, raw sound. Are you pumped to listen to this thing? Because we sure are.

Austin - Post Malone

Our boy Posty will be back in the spotlight on July 28, when he releases his fifth studio album Austin. Production on the LP was handled by Malone himself, along with Andrew Watt, Louis Bell, Rami Yacoub, and the legendary Max Martin. The project has also been supported by two singles: the Billboard-charting "Chemical" and the May release "Mourning."

Austin is titled after the artist's actual first name, and it's been revealed Post played guitar on every single song on the album. The record promises to be even more intense than his last effort Twelve Carat Toothache, and we're excited to hear more of the surf-y pop rock and hip-hop vibes that "Chemical" and "Mourning" have delivered.

Sundial - Noname

This record may be the most mysterious one on our list...and that's why we're incredibly excited for it! R&B/hip-hop up-and-comer Noname dropped her critically-acclaimed debut Telefone in 2016 and the follow-up Room 25 in 2018. One pandemic later, the "Diddy Bop" rapper is getting ready to release her third LP, Sundial.

Details on this thing are extremely sparse. While an exact release date is unknown, Noname has confirmed Sundial will drop this month. Additionally, no tracks have been released yet. However, some believe Sundial may include her single "Rainforest," which was shared back in 2021. We can't wait to dive back into Noname's chill vibe once again!
