The B.B. King Estate has confirmed that there is an official biopic on the iconic blues musician going into pre-production in 2021, according to Variety.
The biopic is one of two projects on B.B. King that are in the works. The other project, which is not associated with the estate, is a drama about King’s friendship with drummer Michael Zanetis entitled The Thrill Is On. Wendell Pierce is set to star as King in that project.
Confusion about the two projects erupted after Pierce announced on Twitter that he will be playing King in an upcoming film. The estate then asked Pierce to clarify the details of the project as Pierce's tweet led many to assume he would be starring in a biopic.
Pierce wrote, "The Estate of BB King has requested I clarify the film THE THRILL IS ON is not a biopic in the traditional sense. It is a dramatized version of a real-life friendship story in the spirit of the film ROUND MIDNIGHT. The friendship of 2 musicians, one being the King of the Blues."
As for the biopic, the estate is currently looking at a number of actors to play King and a major director is in talks to helm the film.
