Brandi Carlile Brings Soundgarden Onstage for a Pair of Performances

American singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile teamed up with the surviving members of rock band Soundgarden to perform a pair of the band's songs during her show over the weekend.

Carlile performed at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington on Saturday (Aug. 14), where she received help from Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil, drummer Matt Cameron, and bassist Ben Shepherd. They performend renditions of "Black Hole Sun" and "Searching With My Good Eye Closed."

As Rolling Stone pointed out, the show marked the first time members of Soundgarden took the stage together in their home state since frontman Chris Cornell's death back in 2017. The band's last record together was their 2012 album King Animal.

It wasn't the first time Carlile performed Soundgarden songs. She previously covered the two Soundgarden tracks with Thayil, Cameron, and Shepherd for her 2020 EP, A Rooster Says, which was released as a Record Store Day special. The EP was recorded in Seattle's London Bridge Studio - where Soundgarden’s Louder Than Love and Temple of the Dog were recorded.

In January 2019, she also performed "Black Hole Sun" during a tribute concert for Cornell, called I Am The Highway. Saturday’s show marked the first time she played “Searching With My Good Eye Closed” live with members of Soundgarden. According to the The Seattle Times, the song was a staple of Carlile’s set in her Seattle club days.

“('Searching With My Good Eye Closed') was Brandi’s choice and it was a good one,” Cameron told Rolling Stone about Carlile’s EP. “(It) is one of Chris’ greatest songs, it has so much depth. It’s a colossus."

“We felt honored that she asked us to take part in her Record Store Day project,” Cameron also said. “We had a blast. I think most people assume the three of us over and done with since Chris passed away, but that’s not the case. It’s nice to know that people still want to hear us play together.”

Thayil added, “Any opportunity to play with all of them again whether live or in the studio, I would embrace without hesitation.”
