The release date for BROCKHAMPTON's final studio album The Family is nearing, and the group has wasted no time dropping singles and videos to promote their last effort. This week, they've dropped a dramatic song and video called "The Ending."
Just like the last single they released ("Big Pu--y"), "The Ending" only features bars from group ringleader Kevin Abstract. Directed by Joshuah Melnick, the visual for the track sees Abstract drunkenly overstaying his welcome at a dive bar before he angers the bartender and is dragged out by security. The final shot of the video shows the rest of BROCKHAMPTON happily hanging outside the bar, with Joba and Bearface playing pool.
The song sees Kevin recount the early days of BROCKHAMPTON: when him and his friends packed up and moved to Los Angeles and eventually created their defining Saturation trilogy. The intro samples the 1976 single “Let Me Be The One, Baby” by Willie Hutch. "This the most corrupted vision / I turned my friendship into a business, into an empire," Abstract raps in the middle of the song's only verse, before finishing it off with, "This the ending we all envisioned, right?" / This is me, Abstract gone for the night / How you feel?"
The Family will arrive on November 17. At the start of the year, the group announced they had canceled the majority of the upcoming tour dates and would take an “indefinite hiatus” after their two shows at Coachella. In a series of since-deleted tweets, Abstract made clear that The Family really is their last project. “We broke up earlier this year bc sh-- just wasn’t working out,” he wrote. “This sh-- is over. Last one next week.” According to a press release about the album obtained by Complex, “The Family is a story about Brockhampton.”
