Center Stage on Live365: Rudeboy FM

Center Stage on Live365 this week is Rudeboy FM – More R&B, Hip-Hop, and Reggae Music, Less Talk! We spoke with the station manager Colonel Shortie about their history with radio, their station's programming, and we got some music recommendations. Check out the interview below!

What made you get started in radio?

I have always been fascinated with the concept of playing music to entertain the masses. I came from a background of being a recording artist, acting (supporting cast, nothing major lol), editing, photography, and playing sets as a DJ at various events including weddings, corporate events, and parties. I knew deep down my passion was to entertain and felt the urge to take it to the next level. Without going into too much detail, I tried to get into the FM broadcast side of things, but found that difficult if done the correct and legal way. So, I eventually discovered a phenomenon called internet radio, but again, came up against many hurdles and obstacles, e.g. servers, licensing, royalties, and so forth.

After further research, I found Live365 (over ten years ago) and all my hurdles and obstacles disappeared! I stuck with that for awhile but for personal reasons had to pull the plug on that for a few years, but now my station is back! And back to stay! It helps too that Live365 has evolved giving people like me more control of our stations and neat AutoDJ features that make it feel as if a human was present during my downtime!

What brought you to Live365?

Extensive research and comparing options.

What's your favorite part about running your own radio station?

The buzz I get from playing music that I love, that others will love too! Being in people's ears who could easily be listening to something else, but they choose Rudeboy FM!

Tell us about your station's programming. What can listeners expect when they tune in to your station?

Guaranteed nonstop R&B, hip-hop, and reggae music (apart from the rare quick commercial break no more than 30 seconds at a time), less talk, and as the station grows, I will be giving other established and new DJs their own slots. But the main focus and rule at Rudeboy FM is more music, less talk, and the most up-to-date new music you could ever need in the genres we cover. And of course the popular hits we all love.

Name one artist that you play on your station that is underrated in your opinion.

KS LDN, particularly the track "Love Me Now"

What's your favorite music memory/moment?

When I recorded my own single that also made it on vinyl, which is no easy feat!

Please list your top 5 or 10 songs, with a brief reason why each song made your list.

  1. "Differences" - Ginuwine
This song has to be one of the sweetest slow jams ever to be made and took me back to when I got into my first serious relationship.

  2. "What You Know Bout Love" - Pop Smoke
I love this track, and it uses a sample of Ginuwine's "Differences."

  3. "I Believed It (feat. Mac Miller)" - dvsn & Ty Dolla $ign
This embodies everything I love about the type of rap music I love, when it has a sweet R&B hook to it, but still maintains straight fire rap verses!

  4. "The Way Life Goes Remix (feat. Nicki Minaj)" - Lil Uzi Vert
Again, this is the type of rap music I love the most, heavy R&B and hip-hop beat blended together and two very popular artists doing it justice!

  5. "Sex Story" - Ar'mon & Trey
I love this track so much, not because of the subject matter, but because of how it sounds, the sweet slow jam R&B sound it has, and the way Ar'mon & Trey execute the lyrics. It takes me back to another once popular R&B singer who unfortunately fell from grace and is no longer featured on my station. I loved his style of production and singing, so having these new artists Ar'mon & Trey bringing that style of top-sounding slow jam R&B back in 2021 is a win for me!
