Florence and the Machine Drop New Song 'Mermaids'

Florence and the Machine have shared a new song called “Mermaids.” It arrives on a new “complete edition” of last year’s Dance Fever.

The group memorably teased the song two weeks ago (April 3), when Florence Welch released footage of herself singing in a bathtub, complete with a mermaid tail. “Mermaids” is the second single from Florence + the Machine in 2023. The song was initially cut from Dance Fever. Besides the mermaid video, Florence + the Machine first teased the track through a pre-save link on their website, and it was confirmed to be an addition to the “Dance Fever Universe.”

"Mermaids" hears Welch and the group dive into slow siren-esque territory. Not only does Welch sing about the secret ferocity of mermaids and make references to Hans Christen Andersen’s The Little Mermaid ("Razor blades all in your feet"), she also uses the song to touch on her old wild party days.

Since releasing Dance Fever with her namesake group in early 2022, Florence Welch has shared a new version of “Morning Elvis” from the album, featuring Ethel Cain and recorded live in Denver. In March, Florence and the Machine covered No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom cut “Just a Girl” for the second season of the series Yellowjackets.
