Joni Mitchell Puts Music Back On Spotify After Two-Year Protest

Right after Neil Young announced he'd be returning his music to Spotify, Joni Mitchell has also put her music back on the streaming platform. The two musicians pulled their tunes from Spotify in 2022 to boycott the service's then-exclusive deal with Joe Rogan.

Young removed his music from Spotify after accusing the platform of spreading COVID-19 misinformation by hosting the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Mitchell followed suit in his actions.

When she departed Spotify in 2022, Mitchell wrote, “I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify. Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue.”

However, Rogan’s podcast is now no longer exclusive to Spotify, appearing also on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Amazon Music. As a result, Young is now begrudgingly content with his music being on Spotify because his “music would have very little streaming outlet to music lovers at all,” if he boycotted all the digital streaming platforms distributing Rogan's podcast.

As for other Joni Mitchell news, the singer-songwriter recently won the 2024 Grammy for Best Folk Album and also performed "Both Sides Now" at the event. In October, she'll be performing in two concerts at the Hollywood Bowl.
