R&B singer, songwriter, and former Poplyfe member Kehlani has teased a new album due out this winter, she/they announced Tuesday (September 14).
Titled Blue Water Road, the minute-long trailer shows Kehlani hobbling with an injured leg, making friends with a dragonfly before the insect burns the star and falls to the ground - succumbing to a dark power.
The artist clarified some of the visuals from the trailer on Twitter, saying they were, "coming out of the rubble of It Was Good Until It Wasnt and into the light, on to the road," as they described it.
A fan on Twitter who watched the trailer noticed the continuity in the imagery from IWGUIW, which depicted on its cover art Kehlani escaping the chaos on one side of a brick wall only to find out the other side isn't so pleasant either. "WAIT THIS MAKES SENSE!!! So your leg was hurt from the It was Good Until It Wasn’t Cover!" the user wrote. Kehlani replied with a bullseye emoji - communicating the fan was on target with the theory.

Kehlani detailed plans for Blue Water Road earlier this year in a Rolling Stone interview. They wrote the project last September in a Malibu AirBnB with a collection of close friends and collaborators. The group had originally convened for what they thought would just be bonus songs for the deluxe edition of It Was Good Until It Wasn't.
“We just made so much cool shit, and it was so different from what I would consider to be able to be on the deluxe because it didn’t sound anything like it,” Kehlani told Rolling Stone. “I just was like, ‘F--k it, this is a whole new project.’”
Kehlani has described this new album as being "lighter" than the last one.
"Everything going on right now is heavy,” they said, referring to the pandemic. “Now, not only am I not in a heavy time, but I’m starting to get out of the mindset of ‘When are we getting back to normal?’ And more like, ‘This is our new normal.’ That’s a very privileged thing to say, being that I haven’t experienced a close loved one pass away or get the virus. I think people need some type of warmth, and I’m in the head space of centering positivity."
Kehlani released their second studio album It Was Good Until It Wasn't on May 8, 2020. The project reached No. 2 on both the Billboard 200 and Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.
Besides the Blue Water Road trailer, Kehlani also announced a new song called "Altar" will be dropping at 9AM PST/12PM EST today, September 15. They also released another teaser for the announcement, in which they come face to face with a dark shadow power.
