After teasing new music through her Yitty promotional videos, Lizzo has released her new song “About Damn Time.” She’s also announced her second studio album, Special, will be released July 15.
Lizzo took to social media yesterday (April 14) to unveil Special's black and white album cover. She alerted fans of the project's release date within the caption.
Additionally, Lizzo has released a Christian Breslauer–directed video to accompany "About Damn Time." In the fun visual, Lizzo exits a “Stressed & Sexy” support group. Upon entering the hallway, she busts into a performance that finds Lizzo transform into a glammed-up version of herself as groovy lighting fills the office building.
Regarding the song, Lizzo told Zane Lowe, “‘About Damn Time’ can lead into so many conversations. It’s about damn time I feel better, it’s about damn time we get out this pandemic. It’s about damn time we to get the first Black female Supreme Court Justice. There’s so many things. It’s about damn time we popped the champagne. It’s about damn time the tequila got here.”
Lizzo also discussed the album during the new interview, saying: “I’m writing songs about love from every direction, and I hope that I can turn a little bit of the fear that’s been running rampant in this world, energetically into love. That’s the point. I had a lot of fear, and I had to do the work on myself, and this music is some of that work in turning that fear into love. I hope that when people listen to this album, it makes their day just a little bit better, a little bit more filled with love.”
The new song and news of the upcoming album come just before Lizzo will serve as the host and musical guest on this week's Saturday Night Live. She last appeared on the show in December 2019, performing “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell” during an Eddie Murphy-hosted episode.
Lizzo’s last album, Cuz I Love You, came out in 2019. Her last music release was “Rumors (featuring Cardi B)" last year. Her new TV series Watch Out for the Big Grrrls premiered last month as part of an exclusive deal with Amazon Studios, and her new shapewear brand Yitty launched earlier this week.
