Lorde Surprise Drops 'Solar Power' Single & Video

After teasing new music was on the way and making some public appearances here and there, Lorde has released her first single since the premiere of her last album, 2017's Melodrama.

The new song is called "Solar Power" and according to Lorde, the album the song will appear on bears the same name. The single was a surprise release, and was timed to coincide with the solar eclipse. The strummy, summer-esque song features background vocals from Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo. It was co-written and co-produced by Lorde and her frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff.

In an emailed note to fans, Lorde talked about the new project. "The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors," she stated. "In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through."

The release date for the new album has yet to be confirmed, though the singer has hinted fans can “look to the natural calendar for clues” on when new things will drop. Lorde told Australian radio station Triple J on Friday morning that Solar Power will be “light, playful and fun.” This is a big pivot from typical Lorde projects, which are known for their edginess and dark feel.

Lorde originally planned to release "Solar Power" in June 2020, but she delayed it after the sudden death of her pet dog, Pearl, in November 2019. It was “indescribably painful,” she said that year. “A light that was turned on for me has gone out. The bright energy I was trying to communicate to you has gone, for now.”

Lorde has kept a low profile since 2017, but she seems to be coming back into the spotlight now. Back in March, she performed a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Tougher Than the Rest" with Marlon Williams while he was performing in Auckland. Last month, Lorde was announced as a headliner at Barcelona's 2022 Primavera Sound Festival, alongside The Strokes, Dua Lipa, and more.

Lorde has also dropped a new video for "Solar Power," which sees her running around a beach community in a bright yellow outfit.
