MGMT Announce New Album 'Loss of Life'

MGMT are back with their first new album since 2018's Little Dark Age. Their fifth studio effort will be called Loss of Life and will be released on February 23, 2024.

Featuring 10 tracks, Loss of Life was co-produced by Andrew VanWyngarden, Ben Goldwasser, Patrick Wimberly, and Dave Fridmann. The project includes a collaboration with French artist Christine and the Queens, titled "Dancing in Babylon."

The band teased the new album last month when Andrew VanWyngarden posted a photo of a test pressing on a subreddit dedicated to the band. The post was accompanied by a picture of a banana and the text “elf of soils,” an anagram for Loss of Life.

In a statement about the LP, VanWyngarden and Goldwasser said, “All joking aside (never!), we are very proud of this album and the fact that it was a relatively painless birth after a lengthy gestation period, and are happy to be releasing this baby into the world with Mom+Pop.” They added, “Musically speaking, we are running at around 20% adult contemporary and no more than this, please.”

To drum up attention for the new LP, MGMT has released the single "Mother Nature." It comes with a new animated music video directed by Jordan Fish. In a statement about his visual, he said, “I hope the story makes people happy and feel connected to family, friends, and the animal kingdom as well.”

In other MGMT news, the group released the non-album singles "In the Afternoon" and "As You Move Through the World" after Little Dark Age. Last year, they released the archival live album 11•11•11.
