Update 7/19/22: Black Label Society frontman Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante are joining the surviving members for the tour.
Iconic metal band Pantera are set to reunite in 2023 for their first tour in over 20 years. Surviving members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown have signed with a booking agency for an upcoming North American trek.
Billboard reports the band members have signed with entertainment agency Artist Group International for the tour dates. Peter Pappalardo and AGI founder Dennis Arfa act as agents. “We are thrilled to be working with such an iconic band and bringing their music back to the fans,” Pappalardo said in a statement.
Pantera played their last show on August 26, 2001 at Yokohama’s Beast Feast festival as part of their Extreme Steel Tour. In the wake of the September 11 attacks in 2001, the group cancelled their remaining dates. They then disbanded two years later in 2003.
Two huge questions loom in regard to the upcoming Pantera tour: who will play guitar and who will play drums? Founding guitarist Dimebag Darrell was tragically killed in a Columbus, Ohio mass shooting in 2004 during a show with his band Damageplan. His brother Vinnie Paul – who also co-founded the band – died in 2018 from natural causes including heart disease.
Considered one of the most successful and influential bands in heavy metal history, Pantera was founded by late brothers Vincent “Vinnie Paul” Abbott and “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott. The band broke onto the scene following the release of their fifth album, 1990’s Cowboys from Hell, with new singer Phil Anselmo. According to representatives for the band, Pantera have sold more than 20 million albums, earned platinum status for five albums, and received four Grammy nominations.
