The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the 16 artists that are nominees for the Rock Hall Class of 2020.
Nine artists are nominated for the first time: Pat Benatar, Dave Matthews Band, The Doobie Brothers, Motörhead, The Notorious B.I.G., Soundgarden, T. Rex, Thin Lizzy, and Whitney Houston. Returning nominees include Depeche Mode (two previous noms), Judas Priest (nominated for Class of 2018), Kraftwerk (five previous noms), MC5 (four previous noms), Nine Inch Nails (two previous noms), Rufus featuring Chaka Khan (three previous noms), and Todd Rundgren (nominated for Class of 2019).
The RRHOF Class of 2020 is decided by an international body of more than 1,000 voting members. However, fans are able to impact the vote from Oct. 15 to 11:59pm ET on Jan. 10, 2020. During this span of time, fans can search “Rock Hall Fan Vote” on Google, search any nominee’s name plus “vote” to cast a ballot with Google, vote at RockHall.com, or vote at the Museum itself in Cleveland. Once the fan voting window ends, the five artists who receive the most fan votes will be included in the tally to determine the 2020 inductees.
In order to be considered for the Rock Hall, an artist’s first commercial recording must have been released 25 years prior to the year of induction. In this year's list of nominees, Detroit proto-punks MC5 have been eligible the longest whereas hip-hop legend The Notorious B.I.G. has received a nomination in his first year of eligibility.
The 2020 inductees will be announced in January 2020. The 2020 induction ceremony will return to Cleveland, OH on May 2, 2020.
