Sarah McLachlan has announced a comeback record. Better Broken, her ninth studio album, is set for release on September 19.
It's been almost nine years since the Canadian musician dropped her Christmas record Wonderland, and over a decade since she released her eighth studio effort, Shine On. Better Broken will be McLachlan's first new album of original material since the latter project.

The LP will contain eleven tracks. McLachlan recorded Better Broken at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, working closely with producers Tony Berg and Will Maclellan. Other musicians who contributed include Wendy Melvoin, Matt Chamberlain, Benny Bock, and Greg Leisz. Muna’s Katie Gavin features on the tune “Reminds Me.”
“A lot of the lyrics on this record came from thinking about the world right now and asking, ‘How do we move through this landscape? How do we keep our heads above water when it feels like so much is falling apart?’” McLachlan said in a press release. “I don’t know if I have any answers, but channeling all that angst and uncertainty into the music has been so cathartic. I hope that this record provides people with some relief and release - but in the end I just want them to take whatever they need from it, and make the songs part of their own story.”
To drum up excitement, McLachlan has shared a dreamy music video for the record's title track. Directed by Lauren Wade, it sees the artist playing piano and singing "Better Broken" in a shadowy space.
In other Sarah McLachlan news; a CBC documentary about Lilith Fair, the 90s touring music festival organized by McLachlan that featured an all-female lineup, is currently in post-production. In 2024, she toured North America to mark the 30th anniversary of her third album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Back in 2022, she acted in a parody ad for Bolt mimicking her infamous ASPCA infomercials.
